I’m a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work, the more I have of it.
That quote has been around forever and attributed to many people, including The Amish, Thomas Jefferson, and Mark Twain.
Regardless of who said it, I believe in that quote.

You know how it goes: a friend-of-a-friend refers you because of other work you’ve done. In this case, it was a music-based referral, which is how I started working with artist Dee Railleur.
At first, I thought this wasn’t going to happen. We’re very different people; sometimes, that scenario works well, and occasionally, it’s a trainwreck.
But as we communicated, I learned we had some things in common. She’s an abstract painter who starts by writing stories. I love abstract paintings and have a similar approach to writing music.
Then came the topic of her songs: her life.
I give her credit because I’ve always found writing about something directly related to me to be very difficult. But she just tells it the way it is:
I seek to find and show the truth no matter how hard the journey may be.

Homewrecker is the first song I wrote based on a series of paintings she created. But the song isn’t from the usual perspective of, say, Gretchen Wilson’s song of the same title. It’s from the perspective of why she enjoys being a homewrecker.
A lot of discussion ensued because I didn’t find this topic relatable until I remembered that I had observed two homewrecker situations. The cause of both were identical: Men unwilling to end relationships that had clearly run their courses before starting new ones. You can imagine how thrilled the women were.
So, my perspective wasn’t Gretchen Wilson’s or Dee’s, which made for an interesting story from a viewpoint I had yet to consider. That’s not to say that Dee’s thoughts on the subject aren’t well-represented. After all, the song is about her. But if you read between the lines, a second story is told through the lyrics.
Check out the song and let me know your thoughts on Patreon.
